Children are shown how to identify some landscape features. They are shown how mountain peaks are indicated on maps. It is explained that maps can show the actual height of high ground using spot height descriptions.
Children are also shown that at certain points on the landscape there are actual pillars called triangulation pillars which indicate particular high points on the landscape. Children will come to understand that triangulation pillars or trig points are another way of spotting the top of a mountain on a map and that the symbol for a trig point is a small triangle.
Valleys - areas of low groundValleys will have steep ground on either side and they will often have a river running through them.
- How to spot them: Look for flat ground with lots of contour lines nearby showing steep ground.
