Overview
This unit sets out to meet some of the key objectives of the primary science curriculum strand unit 'human life' for 5th and 6th class pupils.
The unit is designed to support concept development in the following:
- Understanding about food and nutrition;
- Structure, function and care of teeth;
- Food for energy and growth;
- A balanced diet and making dietary choices;
- Developing an understanding of the ways in which the body protects itself against disease and infection, including a basic understanding of some common illnesses and some hygiene tips;
- Some understanding about some of the body's major internal and external organs.
In addition, pupils would be encouraged, through using the materials on this website, to develop skills of
- Questioning - at times, pupils are encouraged to ask their own questions and consider how to answer them;
- Observing - pupils are guided through observational work on their own teeth
- Sorting and classifying - gathering and grouping data on food
- Recording and communicating - certain activities encourage further discussion, presentation or the interpretation of data
- Designing and making - in a 'virtual' setting, pupils design and make a packed lunch.
Many elements of this unit have strong links to SPHE and some aspects feature links to history.
