Showtime
The Tullow Show hosts competitions for poultry, gardening, flower arranging and crafts. Home-made bread, cakes and jam attract many entries. There are also art and and photography competitions. This creates a very lively and cultured atmosphere.
The show is a unique way for small artisan bakers, cheesemakers and other food producers to show off their produce and win new customers.
To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Tullow Show, in 2005 there was a competition for the best-dressed lady wearing 1940s-style clothing. Examples of fashions in decades gone by can be found in newspaper advertisements of the day.
Here is an advertisement taken from the Carlow Nationalist, featuring a selection of women's coats, available at Shaw & Sons Ltd. Department Store, Tullow Street, Carlow. The advertisement shows the latest styles for winter in a variety of materials.
