Return to Ireland
Frank returned home to Carlow in the spring of 1888.
By this time, he was suffering severly from malaria and exhaustion. He died on 15 October at his home in Dublin Street.
A tribute from a fellow artist, Sir John Lavery, in the Scottish Art Review said: "It was his hope... to make it possible for an Irishman to contribute to art without the necessity of repatriating himself."
He had hoped to spend the later part of his career in Ireland, to encourage young Irish artists.

Today
Although Frank could not achieve this, he would surely be glad to know that today 24 of his paintings survive, many of which are in the National Gallery and the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin.
Here, they live on, as a source of inspiration for all visitors, especially young Irish students.
