What to do

Co. Carlow is located in the south-east of Ireland. It is bordered by five counties: Laois, Kildare, Wicklow, Wexford and Kilkenny. Surrounded on all sides by other counties, Carlow does not have any coastline.

Two important features of the Carlow landscape are the Blackstairs Mountains and the River Barrow.

Carlow is also the name of the county town. It is approximately 92 kilometres from Dublin and is the largest town in the county.

The population of Carlow county is approximately 50,500, with the number of people living in the county town estimated at 13,900. The population has grown almost 10% since the 2002 census, which is quite a high percentage in a short period of time.

Changes in Carlow over the last number of years reflect changes in much of the rest of the country. Children growing up in Carlow today live in a very different world from the one in which their grandparents grew up. The houses they live in, the schools they attend and the clothes they wear are different.

In this section, we will take a look at some aspects of everyday life in Carlow, both past and present.
