Courtesy of Stephen King.Bus Éireann and Rapid Express Coaches provide multiple services to Dublin and Waterford daily. The buses stop at several points along the route. There are also links to and from other towns, such as Bagenalstown and Tullow. At present, Carlow town does not have a public service bus link between outlying housing estates and the centre of town. Many people use taxi services instead, or their own cars or bicycles.
Carlow town is well linked by road to Dublin, Waterford, Kilkenny and Portlaoise. Traffic congestion remains a problem within the town centre, although in recent years relief roads were provided to enhance the flow of traffic. Two National Secondary Roads pass through the county. These are the N80 route to Enniscorthy and the N81 Dublin to Tullow route.
The building of the N9 Kilcullen to Waterford route is a major new development which will impact on Carlow town. The Bill Duggan Bridge and Northern Relief Road which diverted east-west traffic away from the congested town centre has helped to speed up road links between Carlow, Castlecomer and Portlaoise. It also opened up fine views of the River Barrow and the Killeshin Hills for pedestrians and motorists.
