Farming in the Burren
Over the centuries, farming helped to create and maintain the Burren as it is today. The Burren was once covered in forest.
As the trees were cleared, intensive farming and over-grazing led to the erosion or wearing away of much of the soil. The tradition of labour-intensive, mixed farming and winter grazing on the uplands has kept the grasses from smothering the unique Burren flora.
Whether these farming practices will continue is in question, as it may not continue to be profitable enough to support the local population.
