The Burren provides a natural habitat for one of Ireland's shyest mammals, the pine marten. The Irish name for pine marten is 'cat crainn'. As the name suggests, the pine marten's natural habitat was once woodland. Over the years, pine martens became unpopular with farmers because they attacked poultry. Due to hunting, their numbers declined.
