  • Aspects of Donegal

Wind

Humans have used wind energy for many centuries. The ancient Egyptians used boats with sails to travel from shore to shore. Before engines were invented, explorers crossed the seas in sailing ships powered by the wind. Windmills have been used for centuries to pump water as well as grind grain.

These days, the wind is being used to produce electricity. Huge white windmill-like turbines can be seen in different parts of the country. There are a number of wind farms in Donegal. The high exposed mountainous areas of the county provide the perfect environment for wind farming. Donegal has the highest wind speeds in the country.

Pros and Cons

Wind energy is a clean alternative to fossil fuels like coal, oil, gas and turf.

Ireland has some of the highest wind speeds in Europe so it is a logical step to harness that free, natural resource.

Remote, exposed landscapes provide the ideal location for wind farms. However, these areas are very beautiful and some people are concerned that wind farms damage the natural beauty of the landscape.
