Drumboe Castle, Stranorlar, Co Donegal in the early 20th century
Black and white photograph of Drumboe Castle, Stranorlar in the early 20th century. The large three-storey house, which is shown here to be in a good state of repair, has two side extensions, a bay frontage, and multiple chimneys. Home to the Hayes family since the 17th century, the castle now lies derelict. There are tragic connections to the house: during the Civil War in 1923, the Free State Army executed four members of the Irish Republican Army there. They are known in history as the “Drumboe Martyrs”.

www.finnvalley.ieFor nearly 100 years, Stranorlar was the headquarters of the County Donegal Railway system, serving Derry, Letterkenny, Strabane and south of the Barnesmore Gap to Glenties.
The Hiring Fair was held in Ballybofey every May and November. Although most of the young workers came from West Donegal, many were from the Finn Valley.
