  • Aspects of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown

If you take a stroll through one of Dun Laoghaire's parks or public spaces you should keep your eyes open for some interesting sculptures. In 1986, nine sculptors were selected to create pieces of art for Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown's public spaces.

The 'Archer II' is a piece of sculpture located in Newtownsmith in Sandycove. It was designed by Niall O'Neill. It is made from white concrete and steel. The sculpture is positioned in a very suitable location, aiming the arrow out past the James Joyce Tower.

On the right is a photograph of a sculpture called 'Celebration' created by Dick Joynt. It is over two metres high and is made from Kilkenny limestone.

Can you see what it represents?

It is a woman holding her child up in the air. It is a celebration of life.

Take a look at the sculpture in this image. What does it look like?

This piece of art is called 'Red Sails at Sunset' by Bernard Mortell. It is located beside the Martello Tower in Seapoint. The design is meant to represent sails changing into waves and back into sails again.

Imagine you were asked to design a piece of art for your local community. What would it look like?
