They were set up under The Irish Co-operative Movement, with the first established in Dromcollogher in Co. Limerick in 1889. There was often a long queue outside the Creamery, as you can see in this photograph.

Farmers could sell their milk to the Creamery for extra income and customers could buy dairy produce for their homes.
