The lay of the land
In the northern parts of the county the land is often coarse and poor, except in the valleys, where the soil is rich with minerals from natural rocky deposits.
In the Old Red Sandstone valleys there are some very fertile regions. Also there are large boggy districts which can be drained and made into perfect soil.
However, over one-third of the total area of Kerry is quite barren. Dairy farming is very largely done in the northern end of the county.
There are two major Creameries in Kerry, called Kerry Group and Lee Strand. Let's learn a little bit more about Kerry's special relationship with cream.
