Housing Needs Assessment

As part of its Housing Needs Assessment policy, Kerry County Council instituted a practice whereby the existing homes of applicants were photographed to provide a fuller picture of applicant's housing needs. A small selection of the photographic record survives in the Kerry County Archives. The photos here show the nature of many rural dwellings at the time, with corrugated iron or thatched roofs. Some are in a severely dilapitated state.

Shoddy Housing

Houses in the past in Kerry were not built to the high standards we have today. Therefore many fell into poor condition very quickly.

In the 1960s, Kerry County Council photographed houses of people who wanted to be given new houses.

You can see the poor condition of many of these houses (especially in rural areas) from these photographs.

Some had corrugated iron roofs as in this photo.

Others were in an even more run down state.
