In 1823, O'Connell set up the Catholic Association, which became very popular. O'Connell himself became a national figure. His big chance came in 1828 when he became the member of Parliament for Co. Clare. However, he could not take his seat in Parliament because he was a Catholic. He led the people's demand for their rights.
