Daniel O'Connell was born in Carhen, Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry on August 6, 1775. He first went to school in Cobh in 1788. He was a clever boy and his father wanted him to go on to university, but at that time Catholics in Ireland were not allowed into university.
He went to France to study instead. He later studied in London and qualified as a lawyer.
