In the photograph is Miss Fitzgerald, the first teacher on the Great Blasket under the Irish Free State, outside the schoolhouse with her class in 1930. Beyond the school, the Atlantic Ocean is visible.
By 1953, the Great Blasket had been abandoned because of rapid population decline. If you go to the island, you can still see the remains of the school.
