  • Aspects of County Kilkenny

Kilkenny is a county that is steeped in the traditions of hurling. They share with Cork for the most number of All-Ireland Senior Championships won, at 30 titles each.

Kilkenny has also been the birthplace to some of the most famous and celebrated hurlers ever to play the game.  From Eddie Keher to DJ Carey and through to Henry Shefflin today, Kilkenny has been blessed with some of the greatest hurlers of all time. Let's look at the achievements of this hurling-mad county.

The Cats

Kilkenny, or 'The Cats' as they're also known won the first of their 30 All-Ireland titles in 1904. By 1913, they were the first and only county to win three All-Irelands in a row.

Kilkenny have won 64 Leinster titles up to 2007 and have been in more All-Ireland finals (54) than any other county.

The Managers

Kilkenny have been lucky to have 2 very successful managers down the years. The first was Fr. Tommy Maher of Thomastown. He managed from 1957 to 1978 and the county won 7 All-Irelands and 14 Leinster crowns.

The current manager is Brian Cody from Kilkenny City. He has managed the team since 1998 and has helped them win 5 All-Irelands and 8 Leinster titles.

Famous Players

To celebrate the millennium in 2000, the GAA selected the best hurling players of all time. Kilkenny had four of the 15 chosen. They were Paddy Phelan, Lory Meagher, Jim Langton and Eddie Keher.

Eddie Keher played for Kilkenny between 1959 and 1977. In 50 championship games, he scored a record 36 goals and 307 points. He won 6 All-Irelands, captaining Kilkenny to victory in 1969.
