Around 1900, most houses were single storey and built with local materials. They had three or four rooms.
Sometimes houses were built specifically for one occupant and only had one or two rooms.
An example of this type of house can be seen to this day near the village of Cloone.
The small houses, where most people lived, were usually thatched and had white washed walls. They had small windows and a half door. There was an open-hearth fire in the kitchen on which all the cooking and baking was done.
Most kitchens had a dresser with shelves on top to hold and display mugs and plates. There were drawers and a storage area below.
