  • Aspects of Leitrim

The shoemaker, also known as the "cobbler", was once an important person in Irish towns.

In olden days, many people only had one pair of shoes. When they needed their shoes repaired they would have to wait while the job was done.

His workshop was generally small, with shelves full of shoes waiting to be repaired. A "last" and a hammer were the main tools of the cobbler.

These days, people rarely go a cobbler. There are very few cobblers left in Ireland.
