Interesting Facts about John McGahern
- John McGahern won many honours and awards, including the Irish American Foundation Award, a Booker Prize nomination for Amongst Women, the Irish Times-Aer Lingus Fiction prize and an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin.
- McGahern also wrote plays for radio and television and his stage play The Power of Darkness was produced by the Abbey Theatre in 1991.
- When he was fired from his job as a national school teacher in 1965, because of the ban on his latest book, McGahern went into work anyway and had to be officially dismissed by the Archbishop of Dublin, John Charles McQuaid.
- Many Irish writers, including Samuel Beckett, campaigned to get his book off the banned list and to reinstate him in his teaching job.
