The Easter Rising
The leaders of the 1916 Rising were duly brought before a court martial and sentenced to death. Seán Mac Diarmada was shot dead in Kilmainham Jail in Dublin in May 1916.

Just before his death, Seán Mac Diarmada wrote a touching letter to his family, a copy of which can be seen in his homestead. His home still stands and is preserved as a National Monument.
The house still contains beds, chairs, dressers and cooking utensils as they would have been in Seán Mac Diarmada's youth. It bears witness to the simple lifestyle of a self-supporting people.
A statue to his memory was erected in his native Kiltyclogher and a major Dublin street bears his name.His memory will always be associated with the struggle for Irish independence in 1916 and the price he paid in order to contribute to its final achievement.
