Carrick-on-Shannon is situated on the shores of the River Shannon right beside the border to County Roscommon. It is both the county town of Leitrim and the cruising capital of the Shannon.
The population of the town is around 4,500 and it is expected to more than double in size to 10,000 by 2010.
With the town situated on the River Shannon it has become one of the most popular destinations for cruise holidays in Ireland.

During famine times the Workhouse in Carrick-on-Shannon played a prominent role in the survival of the community. The building currently serves as St. Patrick's Day Care Center and Hospital.

The County G.A.A. pitch, Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, is located at the edge of the town and is a focal point in the life of Leitrim residents.
