St. Mary's Cathedral was founded in 1168 by King Dónal Mór O'Brian. It is the oldest surviving building still serving its original purpose in Limerick.
© Limerick County Library, Limerick Studies Collection.This cathedral was founded by one of the old High Kings of Ireland, Dónal Mór O'Brien, on the site of his former palace, and is one of the most important medieval buildings in Ireland.
In the 1990s, extensive work was done in re-slating the roof, pointing the exterior stonework and drying out the interior walls.
