Limerick in the Sixteenth Century
Here is an early map of Limerick. It dates from 1587. Click on the image to get a closer look.
Maps from this time are not as detailed or accurate as modern maps.
If you look closely at this map, you may notice something odd. Limerick appears to be turned on its side! What we are used to seeing in the west of the county appears in the north in this map.
The map shows parts of the counties surrounding Limerick. Can you find Tipperary, Cork and Kerry? The map does not show Clare.
Can you see the River Shannon on the map? There are two kinds of boat on the river. Can you find a ship with a big sail? Can you find a rowing boat with four passengers?
