The project cost €154m and connects the A1 at Cloghoge in County Armagh with the M1 in Dundalk. 9.4 kms of the route is in County Louth while the remaining 4.6kms are north of the border.
The completion of this road is very important as it combined the efforts of the National Roads Authority, Louth County Council and the Northern Ireland Roads Service. It is the first major road scheme to be completed as one project between the North and the South.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dermot Ahern said:
"the opening of this dual carriageway is a very significant day in the history of Irish road infrastructure projects. By connecting communities north and south of the border with a world-class road we are transforming the transport landscape in this part of the island. The work on this project is an excellent example of how effective cross border cooperation can lead to safer and easier road journeys in less time and in smoother traffic."
