  • Thatched Houses in Meath

Below are listed some of the distinguishing features of a traditional thatched house.

  • A simple rectangular plan with one room opening into the next without any central corridor.
  • Walls of stone or clay.
  • The roof carried by the main walls or on rafters, supported by the walls.
  • An open hearth at the floor level, with its chimney projecting through the roof ridge.
  • Windows and doors on the side, rather than the end walls.
  • A steep roof covered with thatch.
