This is because the town centre is based around four closely connected Squares: the Diamond, Church Square, Market Square and Old Cross Square. Click the map to expand it and see the pattern of the town for yourself.
This unusual layout makes Monaghan a unique town in the North of Ireland. Most other towns in the area were built by planters coming from Britain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They all follow a similar pattern, based around one main town square.
