  • Aspects of Monaghan

The County of the "Little Hills"

Monaghan is the most centrally placed county on Ireland's drumlin belt.

Monaghan, in fact, is all hills! But as very few of them are over 300 metres above sea level, the county takes its name from Muineachain - 'Little Hills'.

The actively farmed little hills enclose many lakes, making Monaghan a very popular place for anglers and water sports.

Gold!

Did you know that gold has been present in Ireland for thousands of years?

Clontibret in northeast Monaghan is one of the places where speculators are particularly interested in.

Research is being done to find out how much gold exists in the hills of Clontibret. Whether or not it will be enough to justify investment by gold mining companies remains to be seen. However, the fact that it's there at all is one of Monaghan's more intriguing secrets!

Population

The 2006 Census revealed that Monaghan's population has risen by only 2.8%, the smallest increase of any county.

This brings the county's total population to a modest 52,772, making it one of the least densely populated counties in Ireland.

Monaghan town is the county's principal town. Other major towns include Carrickmacross, Castleblayney and Clones.
