© Dept. of Environment, Heritage and Local GovernmentCreevykeel court-tomb is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Ireland. It is located close to the village of Cliffony in County Sligo. The tomb dates back to the Neolithic period, between 4000-2500BC.
The tomb has an entrance passage, a cairn (prehistoric burial mound made of stones), an oval court and a double chamber gallery. Ancient rituals were performed in the oval court which is over 50 feet long. In 1935, the tomb was excavated and four cremation burials were uncovered. They also found some pottery, arrow heads made of flint, polished stone axeheads and a chalk ball.
