Mullaghmore is a small fishing village located between Cliffoney and Grange in County Sligo. It is a very popular tourist location. This is due to the award-winning sandy beach which is safe for swimming, surfing and other water sports. Fishing and day trips to Inishmurray Island are also common from here.
Sadly, Mullaghmore is probably best known as the place where Lord Mountbatten amongst others was killed. Mountbatten was a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth 2, and used to holiday in Sligo every year. In August 1979, the Provisional Irish Republican Army planted a bomb on the sailing boat he was using and killed him along with 2 of his relatives and a 15 year old boy from County Fermanagh called Paul Maxwell, who was helping on the boat at the time.
