Image courtesy of The Irish TimesNeil Jordan is a world-famous and Oscar winning Irish filmmaker who was born in Sligo on February 25th 1950. His early career began as a writer but it as a maker of movies that Jordan has become so well-known.
Jordan's first collection of short stories called Nights in Tunisia was written in 1976. He has since written 3 novels called The Past (1979), The Dream of a Beast (1983) and most recently Sunrise with Sea Monster (1994).
First film
In 1982 Neil Jordan wrote and directed his first feature film, Angel which dealt with the Troubles in Northern Ireland and starred Stephen Rea.
Jordan and Rea have since worked on a quite a few projects together. His next film, two years later was called The Company of Wolves which was a fantasy-horror film.
Mona Lisa
Jordan hit the big time with his next film in 1986. It was called Mona Lisa and starred Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins and Cathy Tyson. Hoskins won the Best Actor Award at both The Cannes Film Festival and The Golden Globes, which are two of the most important ceremonies in the film business.

After making two comedies, High Spirits in 1998 and We're No Angels the following year, Jordan wrote and directed his most acclaimed film yet. It was called The Crying Game and was nominated for 6 Academy Awards (Oscars), including Best Picture, Best Actor (Stephen Rea) and Best Director. Jordan picked up the Best Original Screenplay for his fascinating story, which is both a thriller and a romantic tale based around The Troubles.
Jordan's success has continued since then with successful films such as Interview with the Vampire (1994), Michael Collins (1996), The Butcher Boy (1997), The End of the Affair (1999) and Breakfast on Pluto (2005).
