The scale of the rapid development of South Dublin is shown in its rapidly growing population. In 1911, the population of the area now known as South County Dublin was approximately 14,200. Preliminary results for the 2006 census show that the population now stands at almost 247,000.
This huge population increase involved massive development and growth in housing, schools, colleges, hospitals, churches, businesses, shopping facilities, roads, water supply, sewage services, gas, electricity, communications technologies and transport. These developments continue to this day.
