Copyright managed by the Library Council.Many of the occupations in which people were employed in the early twentieth century have now disappeared. A shopper in a town in Tipperary 100 years ago would have passed the shops and places of work of bakers, saddlers, butter makers, shoemakers, tobacconists and millers.
Today, many of these trades are no longer in existence. One reason for this is that lifestyles have changed with developments in technology. Where once there was a saddler, now there is a mechanic.
A Supermarket in the 1950s
This is a picture of the interior of a supermarket in the 1950s. It was a small shop with a collection of necessary household items, such as canned food and kitchen utensils. At that time, many household goods were bought in specialist shops.

© Lensmen Photographic Archive.Additionally, many goods are now available in supermarkets. Big shopping malls offer everything from computers to cheese under one roof. Shoppers have found supermarkets cheaper and more convenient, and many of the old trades have died out.
