Grid references are used to identify areas on a map. Three digits for easting and three for northing identify an area 100m x 100m on an Irish 1:50,000 map. Each grid square has two digits for easting and two for northing. Also, you divide each side of the grid square into ten steps - this gives you three numbers in the easting and three in the northing. A grid reference is a combination of two numbers that identify a position on a map.
One number counts across from left to right (west to east) - this is the easting.
The second number counts up from bottom to top (south to north) this is the northing.
The grid reference is the easting, followed by the northing.

The National Grid
The National Grid system is used to enable one to give a location of anywhere in the country to the nearest 100m. The system uses Eastings (vertical) and Northings (horizontal)to pinpoint a location.

The national grid splits Ireland up into 5 x 5 = 25 grid squares. Each square has a letter of the alphabet ( the letter 'I' is omitted ).
Any point in Ireland can be identified by the grid-square letter followed by the six digits of easting and northing.
