Neoclassicism 18th & 19th Century

Neoclassicism represented a return to the grandeur and simplicity of classical art. The subject matter was historical and moral in comparison to the French Rococo. The main Neoclassical movement coincided with the 18th century Age of Enlightenment which was a period in history where traditional ideas and faith were challenged and scientific reason was sought. Neoclassicism continued into the early 19th century, latterly competing with Romanticism.

In architecture however, the style continued into the 21st century.

Examples:
Jacques Louis David (1748-1825)
           The Death of Marat, 1793
The Oath of the Horatii, 1784-5
