Workhouse Officers Appointed
On Monday 29th January 1844 Board of Guardians met at the Courthouse to elect officers for the government of the Workhouse. Colonel Bruen M.P. was in the chair, the Assistant Poor Law Commissioner, Mr. Muggeridge and several Guardians were also in attendance.
Appointment of Medical Officer
Extract from the "Carlow Sentinel" for February 1844 on the proposal and election of Dr. Porter as Medical attendant (Medical Officer) of Carlow Union Workhouse. Dr. Porter was the only candidate for office. Colonel Bruen endorsed the appointment of Dr. Porter and felt that the duties of his office would be efficiently discharged.

Carlow County LibraryThe first official to be appointed was the Medical Officer. Captain Stewart proposed Dr. Porter for the post and Mr. J. Fishbourne seconded. Dr. Porter was elected unanimously.
The was a short list of two candidates for the post of Master; a Mr. Baird and a Mr. Young. Young had the largest majority and was therefore elected.
The election of Matron was postponed but eventually Mrs. Maryanne Rose was appointed to the position.
Sentinel - Appointment of Schoolmaster & Mistress
Extract from the "Carlow Sentinel" of February 1844 detailing the appointment of the Schoolmaster and Mistress for Carlow Unionk Workhouse. It lists the candidates as Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, Mr. and Mrs Less, Mr. and Mrs. Leeson, Mrs. Elizabeth Cuddy, Mrs. Margaret Doyle, Mr. Ryan. Following the examination of each candidate, Mr. and Mrs. Murphy of Graigue Parochial School were elected to office.

There were eight applicants for the post of Porter. Mr. Ward who had seen Foreign Service was appointed after the casting vote of the Chairman, Colonel Bruen.
