Small Tortoiseshell Butterfly
This colourful common butterfly overwinters indoors in houses as a fully formed adult, emerging in late March to lay its eggs on nettles. Caterpillars are black and spiny. The butterflies are attracted to garden flowers and can be seen on the wing all summer long.
