A Celebration of Film, Music and Literature in Shannon and Kilrush Libraries

Teen Week 2014 will be celebrated by Clare County Library from the 18th - 21st of March in Shannon and Kilrush branches. This is the fourth year that the library service has programmed a series of artistic and cultural events exclusively for teenagers. The week serves a dual purpose raising awareness of reading, art and culture among young adults in County Clare and it gives library staff an opportunity to promote its book stock and electronic resources for this age group.

The programme is supported by teachers and pupils from local second level schools who appreciate the scheduling of a free week-long festival for second level students at their local library. The same events are scheduled for both branches on alternate days and the response through bookings to date has been very encouraging.

This years events include video production workshops, a novel exploration of great literature and hands-on experience of making music through digital technology.

Film maker and video artist Neil Hynes will facilitate two video production workshops on consecutive days in both Shannon and Kilrush libraries. Specializing in the documentary form, he has had his work exhibited in Clare, Galway and Dublin and has recently won an award for his portrayal on film of the Famine in his native West Clare.

His workshops will offer students the bare essentials to gain an understanding and appreciation of video production. The subjects covered in the course of the classes will include everything from technical jargon to focusing on the everyday practicalities of DVD production. Participants will gain hands-on experience with quality broadcast equipment and leave with an all-round understanding and appreciation for the field of video production.

Singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer and poet, Tony Maude will bring the magic of great literature alive for his young audiences in Shannon and Kilrush libraries. His performances Hitting the Road with Shakespeare…Stevenson….and others… will bring great literature by William Blake, R.L. Stevenson and Shakespeare alive for his audiences.

Tony has extensive experience in various educational settings with young people, performing and presenting shows created by, and with the participants.

His Teen Week sessions in libraries will spark the imaginations of his audience, inviting them to think about careers of a creative nature on leaving secondary school. The hour-long workshops will also include the artists performance of some of his original songs and poems. Music workshops are a regular feature of the librarys Teen Week programme and John Lillis has brought his knowledge enthusiasm and passion for digital music creation to young people through his workshops in libraries in Clare over the past few years. John has extensive and comprehensive experience of working with young people in musical environments where he helps young people approach music production from a fresh perspective.
