The Summer Reading Challenge is back @ your local library

Carlow County Library

Summer 2014

Aimed at boys and girls between 6 and 12 years

The Summer Reading Challenge for children will run again across all public libraries in Co Carlow Carlow Central, Muinebheag, Tullow and Borris.

This reading initiative is aimed at boys and girls between six and twelve years and encourages children to read six books over July and August. Sign up at your local library anytime from June 30th 2014 and membership is free!!

Run in partnership with The Reading Agency, the theme this year is “Mythical Maze”.

So how does it work?

  • All participants receive a reading card.
  • Each time you read a book you get your card stamped in the library.
  • If you read six books between June 30th and August 30th, collecting stickers and other treats and rewards along the way, you have completed your card.
  • Children can read whatever they like - fact books, joke books, picture books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library.

In September, all of the children who participated will be invited to a night of celebration, where they will receive their certificate of completion as well as a host of other goodies and treats. Entertainment on the night guarantees lots of laughter, merriment and excitement. Perfect family fun.

Carlow Library Service recognises the important role it plays in encouraging children to read for enjoyment and develop their reading skills especially over the summer months and would encourage all children to join the library and take part in The Summer Reading Challenge. Research has shown that taking part in a summer reading challenge helps children keep up their reading skills during the summer holidays. The Summer Reading Challenge is suitable for all reading abilities.

All primary schools have been contacted with information about the Summer Reading Challenge and information is also available in your local library.

Last year, over 550 children took part in this reading initiative in County Carlow. So get along to your local library - the sooner you sign up from June 30th, the longer you have to read the books and complete the challenge.
