Urlingford Library

Urlingford Library had the privilege of a visit from children’s author David Donohue last week. David has a very special talent-he can spell backwards!! Tell him your name and he can say it to you backwards. This was totally hilarious to the children of Urlingford National School who were thrilled to know that their name sounds totally different backwards. David got the children to try spelling words backwards and the fastest spellers got certificates from him. David said there are 3 things you want to know about a story.” What happens, what happens next and then what happens?” David is working on a new book and we are looking forward to the answers to these wonderful questions.

Children’s Book Festival 2014

Benji Bennett

Much loved children’s Author Benji Bennett visited the library last week to meet 1st class from St. John’s Junior School. Benji read from his new story – “Adam and the Magic Rainbow” and the children were very impressed by his musical skills as much as his writing! He explained what the moral was of his book, and emphasised how important it is to be kind to one another. He discussed the writing process which the children were very interested in, and even created a new story there and then with the help of the class about a boy called Michael with Superpowers, who shoots rockets from his mouth!  He sang a pirate song from another book, and the whole group joined in and almost lifted the roof of the library with their beautiful singing!

Alan Nolan

Author and graphic novelist Alan Nolan visited 5th and 6th class in  St. John’s Senior School to discuss his work. Hugely influenced by comics, Alan brought along his own collection of the Dandy, Beano, Bunty, and Tin Tin comics to show the children what had inspired him as a child. The class were amazed at how he and  a friend had created and sold comics in school as youngsters. Alan talked the class through many of his more interesting characters, including the youngest hurling manager in history from “Fintan’s Fifteen” and a very mysterious detective and his sidekick chimpanzee. Alan then showed the class how to draw the dog from one of his books!
