Creative Writing
Well done to Ms Feeley’s 4th Class in St John’s Senior School, who recently completed a creative writing course as part of the Writers in Schools Scheme. The writer who helped them to write wonderfully creative stories was Ken Bourke. We are grateful to Ken and to the whole class for coming into the library to read out their work. You can read all about it on our blog.

Book Club
The book chosen for June is Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. Said to be his masterpiece, the novel is strongly autobiographical in nature. The first film version was made in 1934 and starred Bette Davis as Mildred, a role that established her as a star. The next meeting of the book club is June 24th from 11:30 – 12:30. New members welcome.

Summer Events for Children
We are delighted to be taking part in the Summer Reading Buzz this year. The Summer Reading Buzz is a children's reading challenge run by 13 Irish library authorities. Book Club News
Are you stuck for your next choice? We can now offer the following sets of books to local book clubs.

Please enquire from the staff.

Loughboy Library Book Club meets tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss “I’ll Be Right There” by Kyong-suk Sin.

Set in 1980s South Korea amid the tremors of political revolution, I’ll Be Right There follows Jung Yoon, a highly literate, twenty-something woman, as she recounts her tragic personal history as well as those of her three intimate college friends. When Yoon receives a distressing phone call from her ex-boyfriend after eight years of separation, memories of a tumultuous youth begin to resurface, forcing her to re-live the  most intense period of her life. With profound intellectual and emotional insight, she revisits the death of her beloved mother, the strong bond with her now-dying former college professor, the excitement of her first love, and the friendships forged out of a shared sense of isolation and grief.

Yoon’s formative experiences, which highlight both the fragility and force of personal connection in an era of absolute uncertainty, become immediately palpable. Shin makes the foreign and esoteric utterly familiar: her use of European literature as an interpreter of emotion and experience bridges any gaps between East and West. Love, friendship, and solitude are the same everywhere, as this book makes poignantly clear.

The Book Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at 11am and new members are always welcome to join.

Bealtaine Festival
Loughboy library hosted a very successful Bealtaine Festival again this year.

The Alzheimer’s Tea Day on May 1st raised over €400 for this very worthy charity. Great crowds enjoyed the diverse range of Friday morning events which included a demonstration on natural beauty products, a mindfulness workshop and a very lively Traditional Irish Music session and sing-song.
