Scattery Island
Scattery Island is situated about a mile off Kilrush and is home to a 6th century monastery founded by local St. Senan. Among the ruins are six churches and a round tower over 120 metres in height. Over the centuries the island was attacked by Vikings and later was taken by King Brian Boru. Scatty, the Viking word for treasure is said to be the origin of the name Scattery. Near the peir is a visitor reception building which houses an exhibition of the history of Scattery Island.
