Carrigglas Manor
Carrigglas Manor is one the last remaining walled estates in Ireland and covers 600 acres of pasture, meadow and wood. Species include oaks, beeches, ash and sycamore trees.
The Palladian avenue and courtyards was designed by James Gandon, the same architect who designed the Custom House and Four Courts in Dublin. The manor house is designed in the Victorian Gothic style by Daniel Robertson who also designed the Italian gardens of Powerscourt.
The site was once the seat of the Bishop of Armagh before it was taken over by the Huguenot Lefroy family in 1837. Thomas Lefroy, is alleged to be the basis for the fictional Mr. D'Arcy in the Jane Austen novel Pride And Prejudice.
