The extensive gardens, open to visitors in summer, date from the late 18th century and are laid out in the romantic style with winding paths leading to ornamental lakes and follies. The walled gardens have herbacious borders and a magnificent avenue of 200 year old Irish yews. The present owner, Thomas Pakenham, has enriched the woodland gardens with collections of rare plants mainly from China and Tibet, notably magnolias and giant lilies.
