Founded in 1951, the autumn annual festival has become a key event in the international opera diary.  It has built a reputation for unrivalled excellence, and has become a proving ground for operatic stars of the future.  The Wexford Opera House on the redeveloped site of the Theatre Royal, will offer a larger capacity main auditorium (750 seats) with excellent acoustics, a second theatre  ( 200 seats) and many other greatly enhanced facilities.
