Inishowen Maritime Museum
The Inishowen Maritime Museum is situated at the old coastguard premises at Greencastle harbour, one of the oldest fishing ports in the country. The museum houses a number of exhibits centred around a number of maritime history themes specific to the Lough Foyle area. Lough Foyle was a major base for the British Royal Navy especially during the Battle of the Atlantic when British vessels escorting merchant convoys came under German U-boat attack. During the conflict stricken Allied aircraft also crashed in the lough and pilots were rescued from the water by the local coast guard. Over the centuries many ships were wrecked on the nearby shores including ships from the famous Spanish Armada. Lough Foyle was also the scene of Irish emigration for the New World.
