Clonfert Diocesan Museum

The bishopric of Clonfert was established in 550 AD and the diocese was established in 1111 AD. A monastery established by St. Brendan played a major part in Ireland's reputation as 'the land of saints and scholars' during the Dark Ages in Europe. The history of the diocese was marked by religious persecution, poverty and famine during which time the Catholic church fed, educated and lifted the spirits of the people. The museum holds a unique collection of chalices, carved wooden figures and vestments.
