The Butler Gallery is one of Ireland's most vibrant contemporary art spaces outside of Dublin. Its policy and programme are committed to exhibiting the work of Irish and emerging artists along with highlighting international artists of repute. The gallery is privileged to have an important collection of Irish and international art dating from the 1800s, which it is committed to safeguarding for the future. Its vibrant education department, offering programmes for family, youth, adult and community audiences, encourages public engagement with exhibitions, contributing to audience development and raising awareness of the Gallery’s work at a local, national and international level.
The Butler Gallery has been in operation since 1943 and has been located in the basement of the medieval Kilkenny Castle since 1976. It offers visitors contemporary exhibitions, which reflect the constantly changing nature of visual art practice and the range of media used in the making of contemporary work. The Butler Gallery exists on site and off site, as a place of interaction between artists and the public – a contemporary space within a non-contemporary setting. Occupying this unique position on the Irish art circuit, it is dedicated to remaining at the forefront of artistic excellence.
