This parish lies in the eastern part of the County of Longford and in the barony of Granard. It is in the diocese of Ardagh and the Ecclesiastical Province of Armagh, and gives title to the family of Forbes.

A well near the old church is called Cloree or "stone of the king"
The parish is situated in the baronies of Moydow, Rathcline and Shrule. The Royal Canal from Dublin to Longford runs nearly through it's centre. On the West, it is a flat bog: the remainder of the parish is well intersected with roads and ditches.
